Grain Destruction in Interstellar Shock Waves

چکیده

Interstellar shock waves can erode and destroy grains present in the shocked gas, primarily as the result of sputtering and grain-grain collisions. Uncertainties in current estimates of sputtering yields are reviewed. Results are presented for the simple case of sputtering of fast grains being stopped in cold gas. An upper limit is derived for sputtering of refractory grains in C-type MHD shocks: shock speeds vs > 50 km s 1 are required for return of more than 30% of the silicate to the gas phase. Sputtering can also be important for removing molecular ice mantles from grains in two-uid MHD shock waves in molecular gas. Recent estimates of refractory grain lifetimes against destruction in shock waves are summarized, and the implications of these short lifetimes are discussed.

Formation of Interstellar Ices behind Shock Waves

We have used a coupled dynamical and chemical model to examine the chemical changes induced by the passage of an interstellar shock in well shielded regions. Using this model we demonstrate that the formation of H2O in a shock will be followed in the post–shock phase by depletion of the water molecules onto the grain surfaces. To attempt to discriminate between the creation of ices behind shock...

The Propagation and Survival of Interstellar Grains

In this paper we discuss the propagation of dust through the interstellar medium (ISM), and describe the destructive effects of stellar winds, jets, and supernova shock waves on interstellar dust. We review the probability that grains formed in stellar outflows or supernovae survive processing in and propagation through the ISM, and incorporate themselves relatively unprocessed into meteoritic ...

Dust Destruction in the High-Velocity Shocks Driven by Supernovae in the Early Universe

We investigate the destruction of dust grains by sputtering in the high-velocity interstellar shocks driven by supernovae (SNe) in the early universe to reveal the dependence of the time-scale of dust destruction on the gas density nH,0 in the interstellar medium (ISM) as well as on the progenitor mass Mpr and explosion energy E51 of SN. The sputtering yields for the combinations of dust and io...

Interstellar Dust Models and Evolutionary Implications

The wavelength dependences of interstellar extinction and polarization, supplemented by observed elemental abundances and the spectrum of infrared emission from dust heated by starlight, strongly constrain dust models. One dust model that appears to be consistent with observations is presented. To reproduce the observed extinction, the model consumes the bulk of interstellar Mg, Si, and Fe (in ...

STELLAR MgSiO3 PEROVSKITE: A SHOCK-TRANSFORMED STARDUST SILICATE FOUND IN A METEORITE

We have discovered an isotopically highly anomalous MgSiO3 grain in the ungrouped carbonaceous chondrite Acfer 094 with a perovskite-like crystal structure resembling the dominant high-pressure mineral of the Earth’s lower mantle. Oxygen isotopic ratios of the silicate grain are O/ O p (4.91 0.36) # 10 (12 times the 3 solar value) and O/O p (1.36 0.19) # 10 (0.4 times the solar value). This sig...
